about

This song has always been special to me, for several reasons. First, the carnival imagery was inspired by a County Fair my Mother took us to in her home town, Oak Hill, Ohio. I couldn't have been more than 7-8 years old. Mom loved the song and considered it hers. Second, it was written with two friends I met the night I auditioned for my very first Writer's Night at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. Sam Gay and John Tirro are great writers and we ended up playing the Bluebird many times together. Finally, this was one of two songs I performed when I appeared on "Mountain Stage," in the early 1990's. (Larry Groce introduced me as a hometown boy, saying "How can we miss him if he won't go away?" The humor certainly helped calm my nerves as I stepped out to play for my friends.) This is for you, Mom. This song will always be yours. I love and miss you so...

lyrics

Let's go down, to Jackson Field,
There's a Carnival, let's go down.
Drink laughter in, like red, red wine,
Renew ourselves tonight, in Jackson Field.

The calliope and carousel,
Like sirens, they draw us in and cast their spell.

CHORUS:
And the Carnival's full of life,
An invitation in lights,
And the Carnival's in town, tonight.

You and I, let's slip ourselves,
In the funhouse, let's get lost, you and I.
Let's step out of the shape we're in,
Let's get lost tonight, let's slip ourselves.

"Get your tickets, see it all!
Look beyond imagination, " the Barker calls.

CHORUS:

BRIDGE:
Listen to the children's laughter,
Raining down like Heaven's Choir,
It feels so good, to feel this free tonight, tonight.

Let's go down, for one last ride,
Two tickets left, the rest all gone, let's go down.
From the Ferris Wheel, we can touch the stars,
I'll place one in your arms, this one last ride.

Tonight, I'll watch you sleep,
Your face like a peaceful child, safe in your dreams.

CHORUS: x 2

Let's go down to Jackson Field,
There's a Carnival...
