about
Song 15. My one and only power ballad. This song was written as a result of a conversation I had with my close friend, Lon Kelly. He asked why I never wrote songs that featured the upper range of my voice. I replied something like, "I don't care for the sound of my upper register." Lon then told me how much he liked my voice when I sang in higher keys. I thought a great deal about what he said. I realized the only reason I avoided songs in a higher register was my own insecurity. To help face the issue, I wrote this song. It never would have happened without Lon's kindness and encouragement. Additionally, I love the band's performance on this track. Weg's guitar is a beautiful counterpoint to the vocals, Dave's keyboard is played with incredible taste and restraint, Steve's bass provides a wonderful melodic bottom end and Jeff's drums are incredibly sympathetic to my voice, never overplaying his parts. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we did playing it. PS...I always felt Charleston vocalist, Jeanne Sheridan, (then known as Jeanne Pritt,) would sing this far better than I ever could. Her voice is extraordinary. She is one of the best singers I have ever seen.
lyrics
There's a wind that blows in between,
You and I.
Keeping us both at arm's distance,
And we said.
Like a wave that breaks on the beach,
Our foundation sways.
And crumbles away with indifference,
And we said.
And there's a storm gathered over our heads,
We no longer bother to run from the rain.
CHORUS:
And we said we would not walk away,
And we said we'd push harder each day.
And we said over mountains we'd reach,
And we said.
There's a darkness set deep in our eyes,
Where the fires burned.
The fire's no longer existing,
And we said.
And there's a dream that no longer breathes,
We opened our hands.
And the dream slipped it's way through our fingers,
And we said.
And we're sinking from the weight of the rain,
And we slowly feel ground giving way.
CHORUS:
There's a wind that blows in between,
You and I.
Keeping us both at arms distance,
And we said.
And there's a dream that no longer breathes,
We opened our hands.
And the dream slipped it's way through our fingers,
And we said.
And there's a storm gathered over our heads,
We no longer bother to run from the rain.
CHORUS:
And we said,
And we said,
And we said.
